What Are the Signs of Complex PTSD and PTSD?

  • PTSD:

    1. Intrusive memories: Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event. This can include severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the traumatic event.

    2. Avoidance: Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event, avoiding places, activities or people that remind you of the traumatic event.

    3. Negative changes in thinking and mood: Negative feelings about yourself or other people, inability to experience positive emotions, feeling emotionally numb, lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, hopelessness about the future.

    4. Changes in physical and emotional reactions: Being easily startled or frightened, always being on guard for danger, self-destructive behavior, trouble sleeping or concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts, or aggressive behavior.

    C-PTSD:

In addition to the symptoms of PTSD, individuals with C-PTSD may also experience:

    1. Difficulty controlling emotions: This can range from persistent sadness, suicidal thoughts, explosive anger, or inhibited anger.

    2. Negative self-perception: Feelings of helplessness, shame, guilt, stigma, and a sense of being completely different from other people.

    3. Distorted perceptions of the perpetrator: This includes preoccupations with the relationship with the perpetrator, including a preoccupation with revenge.

    4. Interpersonal problems: This includes isolation and withdrawal, feeling distrustful and suspicious, difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships.

    5. Loss of a system of meanings: This includes loss of sustaining beliefs, hopelessness, and a sense of despair.

It's important to note that these symptoms can cause significant problems in social or work situations and in relationships. They can also interfere with the individual's ability to go about their normal daily tasks. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it's important to seek professional help.
