01 / BPD therapy in iowa city

Borderline personality disorder (BPD)

There have been times when all you wanted was the closeness of those around you, then, almost in an instant, there was nothing more you wanted than for all that closeness to disappear. The moment they start to distance, the shame floods in, and the anger arrives to tell them off for leaving.

A silhouette of a person with curly hair is seen in a dark, rainy environment. The person is holding a bow and arrow, pointed horizontally. It is nighttime, and rain is falling heavily, creating a somber and intense atmosphere.
02 / what it can feel like

All you want is connection, but it’s terrifying

People who struggle with BPD are very often braced for extreme emotional and relational turbulence without knowing it. From a young age, all you wanted was friends, someone to love you, safe connections, and a loving internal dialogue - but all of those have come with extremely steep prices.

You may notice symptoms like high rejection sensitivity, falling in love quickly, falling out of love quickly. There might be things like swift mood changes, internal/identity confusion, relational attachment issues, issues with trust and vulnerability, and a short fuse if someone seems to be rejecting you, or distancing themselves from you.

To recognize ourselves in a struggling state is acceptance that its real, and also, that it can change...
03 / How i work with it

Four main approaches

I use EMDR, NARM, DBT, and Ego-State Therapy to help you through the emotional difficulties you are experiencing. EMDR is for individuals that prefer to tackle their work in a linear fashion, NARM is for people who want to address the work without going back through time, Ego-State Therapy is for dissociation, and DBT is there to assist us with skills work and regulation skills.

We start by expanding your window of emotional tolerance: the amount of emotional material you can handle at one moment and stay regulated within. Before we run through EMDR or NARM, we peacefully walk through skills work, resourcing, and overall wellness that can contribute to long-term success.

04 / The logistics

What it costs and how long it takes

No insurance billing, which means no diagnosis is required on a claim form to get help, and no third party gets to decide how many sessions you deserve. A Good Faith Estimate can be provided under the No Surprises Act before we begin any clinical work, so always feel welcome to ask.
